Maintain Your Gates & Fences if You Are Serious About Home Security

Here at Wrought Iron Gates Direct we would like to remind homeowners the importance of maintaining your gates and fencing so they will continue to operate in the correct manner and provide a decent level of security.

Remember that a thief will target a home that looks vulnerable so if you want to create a deterrent carry out the below measures.

Here is a simple maintenance checklist to help you along the way.

Wrought Iron Gates

  • Check the condition of the paintwork looking for signs of rust. If any obvious areas are found to be present they will need to be treated to prevent the problem from spreading. With a number of treatments available on the market you simply paint the solution on and leave for the required period. Once this is done all that is required is a touch up with suitable exterior grade paint.
  • Look at the hinges and latch to ensure they are not worn or loose as the weight of the gate can place a strain on the fixing points over time. Retighten or replace where necessary.
  • Examine the condition of the lock (or padlock if using one) as these can be prone to damage over time. If required they should be replaced with the most secure one you can afford.

Wooden Gates

  • Check the overall condition of the timber looking for any signs of damage, rotting or splitting as this will need to be rectified to prevent further deterioration. Rotted timber will need to be cut out a filled with an appropriate filler. Once any repairs have been carried out sand the entire surface of the gate with a fine grade sandpaper to provide a good key then apply a fresh coat of stain or paint and the gate will come up looking like new.
  • Ensure gate posts are well secured and in good condition. Carry out repairs or replacement where required.
  • Check the fixtures and fittings such as the latch, lock and hinges for signs of wear and tear or damage

Metal Fencing

  • In order to provide an effective boundary, a metal fence should be treated in the same manner as the above wrought iron gates.
