Before the middle ages, wrought iron was used to create weapons and tools, but in the 16th century, its ability to produce decorative gates and railings really came to the fore. The malleability and durability of wrought iron has been proven over thousands of years, however, even with wood, steel and aluminium gates available today, wrought iron is making a comeback.
